Skills & Requirements Essential Responsibilities Supports the Administrator Surgical Services in twenty-four hour accountability for the overall efficiency and the quality of patient care administered.
In collaboration with the Administrator Surgical Services, plans, organizes, coordinates and directs the clinical and administrative functions of the designated nursing departments.
Collaborates with department Administrator to provide direct supervision and leadership for all functions to include employee interviewing, recommendation for hiring or termination, performance reviews and discipline.
Schedules department staff based on patient acuity and staffing patterns. Ensures adequate staff for patient needs on a daily basis.
Provides direct patient care consistent with the Registered Nursing Job description. Functions within the limits of the state Nurse Practice Act and hospital policies.
Familiar with the operation of all equipment in the department and ensure that equipment is in proper working order. Ensure maintenance of an adequate level of supplies.
Monitors safety in administration of medication. Monitors clinical documentation to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with hospital and program standards.
Monitors utilization of the nursing process, ensuring timely completion of the nursing assessment and care plans as well as content.
Monitors clinical management of patients and medical emergencies. Ensures completion of patient’s treatment plans and monitors pain management carried out by staff.
Implements program philosophy, objectives, standards of care and procedures on consultation with Nursing Administration and Administrator Surgical Services.
Develops and maintains daily communication with attending practitioners and consults physicians regarding patient status and needs.
Attends multi-disciplinary teams meetings, representing the Nursing perspective on patient conditions / progress. Ensures a safe, secure, clean environment for patients, staff and visitors.
Assumes responsibility with the Administrator of Surgical Services for infection control monitoring and evaluation for the department.
Ensures cost effectiveness in the use of supplies and forms. Monitors productivity of staff, use of time and the amount of work assigned.
Assists with preparation of Capital and Operating budgets, Performance Improvement planning and other documents as needed.
Assures compliance with Joint Commission, state, federal and other applicable regulatory requirements. Participates in development and maintenance of policies and procedures and Quality Assurance requirements.
Interacts with family and referral sources. Role models iCARE standards and Patient Centered Care principles in daily interactions.
Ensures department staff integration of iCARE behaviors and Patient Centered Care principles into their daily practice. Assists in developing and providing formal and informal learning experiences for staff through identification of staff clinical needs.
Enforces compliance with hospital, program and nursing policies and procedures. Assists, directs and delegates nursing personnel according to their capabilities to meet patient needs.
Continually evaluates the quality of nursing care delivered. Participates in data collection for use in improvement of patient care.
Participates in the orientation and / or on-the-job training of program personnel. Provides Nursing Administration and Administrator Surgical Services with information necessary for making decisions affecting patient care, staffing and program implantation.
