The primary responsibilities of this position are to oversee the operations in the Innovations & Development Laboratory while supporting product / process development projects.
May lead technical projects using current technologies as well as technical initiatives with exposure to business teams.
Seeks guidance from senior staff to understand how to apply scientific and engineering principles in research, development, production technology, quality control, packaging, and processing.
Supports the delivery of technology and business objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Works with clients to conceptualize and develop bench top product prototypes
Stays current on new ingredients and technologies influencing nutritional and supplement claims
Conducts basic research on new product active ingredients and delivery forms in conjunction with Product Development Scientists
Coordinates trial activities between Operations, Purchasing, and Marketing when appropriate
Creates required production documentation for approval to ensure the consistent manufacture of new products; includes batch records, production instructions, process validation and stability protocols
Provides input into developing product specifications
Work with product developers and engineers in identifying critical product and process criteria and parameters
Interfaces with process engineers, flavor experts, packaging, and marketing specialists to resolve problems, such as incorporation of ingredients into the process, different forms of the ingredients, barrier package protection for product stability, flavor off-
notes, etc. and create new ideas
Supports validation start-ups
Assists in trouble shooting process issues
Supports the installation of new process technologies in manufacturing
Ensures the Development Laboratory is operational equipment is in working order, places work orders as required, maintains and orders supplies, keeps basic bulk ingredients on hand and orders as required, works with developers to keep the lab area clean confirms that samples and ingredients are properly stored, coordinates large laboratory projects with the development team
Participates in continuing education as required to expand one’s technical base by learning methods to develop improve formulation quality;
such as flavor, color, texture, nutritional value, convenience, or physical, chemical, and microbiological composition of foods
Prepares technical reports for submission to management and diligently documents all laboratory and experimental activities in a laboratory notebooks or project binder.
Prepares and presents project status or technical presentations to BestCo's management
Provides direction and guidance to technicians / product developers and process engineers in support of new product activities
Other duties as required.

Required Qualifications :
Associate degree or higher in Food Science, or other scientific discipline with at least 1 year product development experience OR a High School graduate with a minimum of 3 years of product development experience in a GMP qualified food production facility (preferably in confectionery products.)
Preferred Qualifications :
Bachelors Degree in Food Science or other scientific discipline.
At least 2 years of Product Development experience.
Experience working in a confectionery product manufacturing environment.
