Department Summary

University Housing, a unit within the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management, is an educational enterprise of the University of Oregon.

    Position Summary

    Community Director (CDs) play a leading role in the creation and implementation of student learning and academic environments within the residence hall communities.

    The CD position is an essential services live-in professional staff member whose primary duty is to provide safety and security of the students within the residence halls and to respond immediately to concerns and issues within the community.

    The CD is responsible for developing a community that enhances the academic experience of each student and provides for personal and community development in collaboration with other staff in University Housing, the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management, and other campus partners.

    In these positions, CD exercise a significant amount of independent judgement and discretion.

    Among their qualifications, CDs are trained as Campus Security Authorities and receive extensive training through UO Housing, UO Police Department, Office of Dean of Students and The Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity.

    This position supervises the Resident Assistants (student leaders) and reports to Assistant Director of Residence Life.

    Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Student Affairs and / or Higher Education (eg. Student Development, Higher Education Student Administration, College Student Personnel Administration, or similar program) OR Master’s degree in related field (e.
  • g. Social Work, Counseling), OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution plus three years of professional experience in residence life

  • One year experience with direct supervision of student staff or student leaders
  • One year experience with emergency response and / or crisis management
  • Live-in position :

    Participates in an on-call rotation and responds to emergencies as they occur within the residence halls and family housing areas.

  • Experience advising student leaders and / or organizations
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice
  • Experience with a developmental approach to student conduct
  • Demonstrated experience with and / or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional year of professional work experience in residence life
  • Three or more years residence life in a college / university setting experience
  • Applied knowledge of student development theory in a residential environment
  • Understanding of living-learning communities and / or residential academic programs
  • Experience serving traditionally underrepresented and underserved students
  • Experience providing academic support to college students
  • Experience with assessment
  • Experience leading and / or participating in staff recruitment and training processes
  • Experience collaborating with faculty in co-curricular settings
