The Colleges seek a part-time faculty member in Basketball. The ideal candidate will share the Colleges’ commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.
This position is a pool position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a pool of applications for positions which are needed on an ongoing basis at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College.
The advantage of pool positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised.

Reporting to the Dean of the Kinesiology, Athletics and Dance Department, the Men’s Basketball Coach is a part-time faculty position in the Athletic Department.
The assignment entails coaching the Varsity Men’s Basketball team and all aspects related to the Basketball program. Assignment of off-
season conditioning and team courses based on applicant meeting minimum qualifications or equivalency in Varsity.
Duties and Responsibilities

1. Coach and administer all aspects of the Intercollegiate Men’s Basketball program
2. Select, train, and supervise assistant coaching and game operations staff
3. Motivate and guide student athletes to achieve academic success and assist in their matriculation to the four-year level and / or in meeting their vocational training goals
4. Evaluate, plan, and coordinate all programs relevant to the success of student athletes in the Intercollegiate Basketball program
5. Oversee preparation of the schedule
6. Monitor and stay within the assigned budget
7. Engage in approved fundraising activities to supplement the program budget
8. Assist in the identification, procurement, and inventory of supplies and equipment for the Intercollegiate Men’s Basketball program
9. Ensure all facilities and modes of transportation are used safely and maintained properly
10. Promote the Intercollegiate Men’s Basketball program within the community and our contiguous recruiting areas through recruiting, public appearances, promotional efforts, community service, camps, clinics, etc.
11. Observe all San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD) Board Policies and Procedures
12. Comply with all California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), Coast Conference, and college rules, regulations, and policies
Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications

The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following :
i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and
ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and / or substantial training in the requested field.
The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his / her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Successful experience in coaching at the club level or higher
2. Demonstrated ability to recruit
3. Demonstrated ability in managing the various aspects of a basketball program, including, but, not limited to, academic advisement, budget, coaching, compliance, evaluation, facilities, fundraising, marketing, operations, scheduling, and student support
4. Ability to plan and direct the conditioning, training, practice, match, and behavioral conduct of all student-athletes in the program
5. Demonstrated ability to coach, develop, and promote an intercollegiate basketball program
6. Evidence of continued professional development or involvement in the sport of men’s basketball
7. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
8. Ability to communicate effectively with all people, including persons of diverse cultures and language groups and people who have disabilities
9. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in a team environment
10. Ability, interest, and willingness to develop and maintain working relationships with club, high school, and four year coaches so as to recruit, retain, and matriculate student-athletes
11. Willingness to work with students having a wide range of skills, motivation, athletic, academic, or vocational goals
12. Ability to evaluate collegiate level athletic prospects
13. Familiarity with current guidelines governing Intercollegiate Men’s Basketball (CCCAA, NCAA, etc.)
Academic employees participate in the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS), a defined-benefit retirement plan through the State of California or they may choose to participate in the STRS Cash Balance program or Social Security.
