PURPOSE AND SCOPE :
Responsible for the processing and testing of clinical and environmental samples; and for the operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of testing instrumentation.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Performs functions that require full knowledge of general aspects of the job.
Works on assignments that are semi-routine in nature, but recognizes the need for occasional deviation from accepted practice.
Performs and provides assistance to lab personnel with more general support tasks that require a better understanding of functions, as directed by immediate supervisor.
Prepares appropriate instrument for operation; load patient samples.
May process specimen / samples and prepare for analysis, as necessary.
May handle chemicals when performing testing procedures.
Responsible for maintenance of equipment and assist in troubleshooting on a daily basis.
Comply with all laboratory safety protocols, including, but not limited to, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper laboratory techniques, disposal of bio-hazard, etc.
Orders reagents, chemicals, equipment parts and other miscellaneous items in general stock.
May coordinate and assist in the work activities of Laboratory Assistants and others as directed.
Responsible for instrument printouts and printing of worksheets.
May refer to Medical Laboratory Scientists for assistance with higher level problems that may arise.
Escalates issues to supervisor for resolution, as deemed necessary.
Assists with various projects as assigned by direct supervisor.
Other duties as assigned.

Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs., and be able to sit / stand for extended periods of time in a laboratory environment.
Must be able to work with clinical and environmental samples, including, but not limited to blood, urine, etc.
Must be able to work with chemicals and / or reagents specific to laboratory testing.
Must be able to work in a medium to high noise level.
High School diploma / GED required.
Two year degree in applied, biological or laboratory sciences preferred.
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS :
1 2 years’ related experience.
Knowledge of medical lab testing and operation of instrumentation preferred.
Good verbal communication skills.
Must be able to multi-task, prioritize and manage time efficiently.
Prior experience with laboratory systems preferred.
PC literacy required.
Ability to follow precise directions in situation requiring speed, accuracy and efficiency.
