Major Functions The Volusia Sheriff's Office is seeking active military members and veterans who want to join the agency as Deputy Sheriff Recruits.

Selected applicants will receive employment as a Special Worker at $10.00 an Hour (40 Hours per week while attending the academy).

Upon acquisition of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) officer certification, the selected applicant will be appointed to Deputy with an hourly rate of $19.

09 and will receive benefits commensurate with that classification.

This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice. Illustrative Duties ( NOTE : These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.

The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)

  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational duties.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • PROGRAM TERMS AND CONDITIONS : The selected applicant agrees to attend all classes and labs required to successfully pass the curricula of the Basic Law Enforcement Academy.

    During periods of class recess, the selected applicant agrees to perform work for the Volusia Sheriff's Office.

    NOTE : Selected candidates must be able to utilize their G.I. Bill to pay for the Basic Law Enforcement (BLE) Academy tuition and fees.

    The Volusia Sheriff's Office is not responsible for the BLE costs. Termination includes :

  • Recruit withdraws from the Academy, or is terminated by BLE Academy authorities; OR
  • Recruit fails to complete the Academy; OR
  • Recruit fails to obtain law enforcement officer certification from FDLE; OR
  • Recruit voluntarily resigns; OR
  • Recruit abandons his / her position before working as a certified law enforcement officer for the Volusia Sheriff's Office for a period of two years following successful completion of the BLE academy and successful passing of state examination; OR
  • The Sheriff revokes the applicants appointment for cause during that period of time.
  • Minimum Requirements Application packets must include the following :

  • Copy of DD214 indicating Honorable Discharge OR
  • Copy of current military orders indicating an end of service within the next six (6) calendar months.
  • Must meet the qualifications for employment set forth in section 943.13, Florida Statute which includes :

  • At least nineteen (19) years of age
  • A citizen of the United States
  • A high school graduate or its equivalent
  • No felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving perjury or a false statement
  • No dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States
  • Fingerprints on file with the employing agency
  • Pass a physical examination by a licensed physician based on specifications established by the commission
  • Good moral character as determined by a background investigation under procedures established by the Commission.
  • Must also possess a valid Florida Driver's License at the time of appointment.
  • Applicants will undergo a polygraph, psychological examination and background investigation.
  • Must successfully complete the Volusia Sheriff's Office Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP).
  • Must successfully pass shooting assessment and physical test (PAT) to qualify for an interview.
  • Based on the above qualifications for employment set forth in section 943.13, Florida Statute, the Sheriff's Office reserves the right to conduct background screening on eligible candidates prior to conditional offer of employment.

    TOBACCO POLICY : It is this organization's policy that individuals hired into special risk positions; may not use any form of tobacco at any time , whether on or off duty, as a condition of employment.

    Candidates must be nicotine-free by the time of pre-employment physical / drug exam, including nicotine-containing products used in tobacco replacement therapies.

    SELECTION PROCESS : Recruits will be selected based upon findings from the following :

  • Application review
  • Panel interview
  • Preliminary background investigation to include : Criminal history check, Financial history check, Employment history check, Driving history check, Military history check, Personal reference check.
  • Physical Abilities Test (PAT).
  • Upon selection and conditional offer of employment as a Special Worker, applicants must be able to pass :

  • Medical examination with drug screening and nicotine screening
  • Psychological evaluation
  • Polygraph exam
  • A comprehensive background investigation
  • CJ-BAT college entrance exam for law enforcement personnel; required for admittance to the BLE Academy Candidate must take the test and obtain a passing score within thirty (30) days of invitation to an interview.
  • Exam fee is not covered by the Sheriff's Office

    NOTE : All tattoos are subject to inspection prior to employment

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Skills in the operation, maintenance and use of specialized police equipment.
  • Knowledge of local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations effective in the County.
  • Knowledge of first aid methods and general emergency methods.
  • Considerable knowledge of the geography of the County including its political subdivisions and road network.
  • Able to keep informed of the current changes in all applicable laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Able to interview witnesses, gather evidence and assist in investigations.
  • Able to testify in court in a professional manner relative to arrests or other police matters.
  • Able to comprehend and execute written and oral instructions.
  • Able to work under stressful conditions.
  • Able to interact effectively with others.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • ADA REQUIREMENTS : Prior to appointment all eligibles will be required to meet the stringent medical standards established by the County of Volusia.

    As part of the pre-employment medical examination eligibles will be required to participate in the Drug Screening Program.

    Physical Demands :

  • Heavy to Very Heavy work.
  • Ability to run a minimum of fifty (50) yards.
  • Ability to climb a minimum of six (6) feet.
  • Ability to jump a minimum of six (6) feet.
  • Ability to drag, lift, carry a minimum of 150 pounds.
  • Ability to crawl a minimum of ten (10) yards.
  • Ability to swim a minimum of fifty (50) yards with a flotation device.
  • Ability to operate emergency vehicles.
  • Ability to traverse all types of terrain, i.e. urban, woods, swamp, hills.
  • Ability to use restraints, i.e. handcuffs, hobble.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, crouch, reach, see, hear, smell, pull, push, stand, kneel, handle, stoop, balance, talk, feel; finger dexterity.
  • Ability to effectuate an arrest with or without resistance.
  • Ability to perform shift work, 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week.
  • Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle.
  • Environmental Demands : Inside and outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including heat, humidity, rain, cold, fog, sleet.

    Possible exposure to hazardous materials and conditions; toxic conditions, fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, confined areas, animal / human waste.

  • Mental Demands : Ability to read and comprehend professional and technical manuals, procedures, journals and documents; legal documents;
  • maps and layouts; memos, reports, summaries and evaluations. Ability to perform basic mathematical functions. Ability to write complex documents relaying information, data, and details.
