Job Description Summary

Process Development Scientist I

Job Summary :

The PD Scientist / Engineer I will work hands-on in a high-performing, cross-functional team developing and transferring scalable processes from clients to GMP for the manufacture of viral gene therapy products.

Team member will be responsible for designing and authoring experimental study plans and reports, executing experimental studies, analyzing data, supporting MSAT ( manufacturing Science and Technology) for process transfer to manufacturing and providing additional support to other departments as required (Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Program Management) with minimal supervision.

The candidate will also evaluate new technologies for new process or processes improvement, where applicable.

The successful candidate will work on client-specific upstream process development, and process tech transfer from client to Process development group and from PD to Production group.

Be able to manage and prioritize several projects in parallel with minimum guidance. Candidate is expected to contribute to tackle problems where analysis of technical data requires an in-

depth evaluation of various factors. Ensures schedules, and performance requirements are met.

Job Responsibilities :

  • Plans and performs tech transfer experiments in the PD lab related to upstream process development and optimization, tech transfer and troubleshooting.
  • Works with adherent culture vessels, stirred-tank or WAVE bioreactors up to pilot scale. Be able to work with some guidance and support of Senior scientist.

  • Scrutinizes existing processes for improvement and scalability, and utilizes knowledge and expertise in upstream production, recovery technologies to establish and optimize new processes for incorporation into viral product manufacturing.
  • Responsible for compiling and analyzing data from PD, troubleshooting and historical processes, and summarizing in high-
  • quality reports, supported with accurate and up to date records, including appropriate lab notebook annotations.

  • Capable of achieving deliverables in a timely fashion, and clearly communicating results to clients and cross-functional teams.

  • Education and Skills Requirements :

  • BS degree in biosciences, engineering or related discipline plus at least 5 years of related working experience in biotech industry;
  • or MS degree and at least 2 years working experience

  • Experience in microbial fermentation, mammalian cell culture is a must; working knowledge and experience of closed and single use systems is desirable.
  • Hands-on experience in upstream and recovery process (WAVE / STR, depth filtration / clarification, ultrafiltration / diafiltration) of mammalian or microbial production process is preferred.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize projects and manage time including the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Good written and oral communication skills including prior successful experiences in technical writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of cGMP requirements and tech transfer experience is preferred.
  • Strong work ethic; ability to perform in a team setting essential for this key position
