Position Summary :

The Clinical Nurse Specialist / Stroke Coordinator supports the educational and clinical needs in the intensive care services by working collaboratively with nursing and medical management to assure quality patient care.

The role includes enhancing quality and patient safety, translating research into nursing practice, acting as a resource in a clinical specialty to colleagues across disciplines, role model / leader in patient care and hospital process and drives improvement in patient care for a wide variety of complex illnesses.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist / Stroke Coordinator, under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, shares 24 hour responsibility for administering all aspects of the stroke program.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist / Stroke Coordinator is responsible for assuring all stroke center standards are met as required by The Joint Commission and the American Stroke Association Get with the Guidelines program.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist / Stroke Coordinator is responsible for program development, planning, organizing, implementation, assessment, patient flow and performance improvement of the service line.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist / Stroke Coordinator coordinates stroke certification / recertification, and reviews medical records for computer to GWTG database.

In addition, the program coordinator is responsible for hospital services utilization, community outreach, EMS outreach and education, staff and physician education and training and marketing communications.

He / she also monitors the quality performance of the stroke program staff and physicians.He / She will function as a role model in the use of the nursing process and develops, introduces and evaluates new approaches to stroke nursing practice.

The program coordinator works closely with physicians to assess and enroll patients in current clinical trials.


  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current RN license in the State of California.
  • BSN required,
  • BCLS and ACLS required.
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification required (can be obtained within 4 months of hire).Minimum of 5 years nursing experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years recent experience in Neuroscience nursing preferred.
  • Prior experience as a Program Coordinator preferred.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
