The Registration Specialist is responsible for the pre-verification of insurance for patients scheduled for services. Ensures insurance coverage, resolves any issues with coverage and escalates complicated issues to a manager.

Acts as a liaison between patients, their health insurance and clinics to assist in understanding their healthcare financial responsibilities.

Provides Clinic Staff with the correct insurance / demographic information to enable a streamline check in process for the patient.

Works to establish timely, correct payment information prior to the patient’s service in order to financially secure the account, promote good customer service, efficient and accurate billing and prompt reimbursement.

Duties include :

  • Verifies benefits and eligibility through payer websites, phone call or our electronic eligibility system (Experian). Contacts the patient / insured regarding termed coverage for upcoming services prior to the patient’s appointment.
  • Works MyChart updates through Epic updating the patient’s accounts to reflect the most accurate / active coverage.
  • Work with assigned outpatient clinics on a daily basis to advise clinic staff of patient’s eligibility status, copays to be collected, and necessary waivers to be signed upon arrival.
  • Verifies all insurance registration information to ensure accuracy using on-line remotes, eligibility system or by calling payer / patient directly.
  • Includes group number, billing address, type of contract, employer, co-pay and subscriber information, primary care clinic and / or primary care physicians.

  • Handles patient / Clinic inquiries related to patient registration, and billing / insurance questions.
  • To qualify for this role you must possess :

  • Knowledge of health plans and payer information.
  • Two+ years in Insurance verification or medical billing with exposure to medical terminology,
  • Good Microsoft Excel and Work skills. Solid understanding of medical terminology. Good organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of UMPhysicians medical billing and clinics. Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to interact with patients, physicians, Fairview financial services and insurance payers.
  • Knowledge of medical financing. Critical thinking skills. Knowledge of UMP computer applications. Ability to work effectively with cultural differences.

    Preferred Qualifications :

  • Vocational / Associate Degree or education beyond High School. OR Equivalent experience as a Patient Assistant with registration experience.
  • 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area, with outstanding medical terminology and medical billing knowledge.
