Duties & Responsibilities

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Capital Giving team is responsible for securing significant philanthropic resources to advance the priorities of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

We accomplish this by cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a broad group of alumni, parent, and friend prospects across the United States, Asia, and Europe through carefully articulated prospect strategies.

  • These prospect strategies leverage academic partners including the FAS Dean, Divisional Deans, and other senior leaders across the FAS and the University;
  • a robust reunion giving program; a large, dedicated corps of volunteers; and, regional and topical engagement activity, including task forces and volunteer committees.

    The Executive Director will lead a management team of four Directors of Capital Giving and a total team of 30-35 individuals including support staff.

    The Executive Director is responsible for working with his / her leadership team to develop and execute annual operating plans designed to maximize fundraising achievement to support a set of broad fundraising priorities articulated by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

    Responsibilities include :

    Staff Management

  • In consultation with the Senior Executive Director of Individual Giving, develops team and individual goals to support defined development objectives.
  • Leverages her / his management team to support staff in achievement of goals.
  • Ensures managers are delivering consistent and timely performance feedback and adhering to Alumni Affairs and Development’s performance management process.
  • Prospect Management

  • Working with colleagues in Prospect Management and Research to ensure portfolios are optimized and regional deployment of staff and resources is aligned with the opportunity presented by our prospect pool in each region.
  • Ensures that managers are working with her / his direct reports to develop robust prospect strategies, tracking on planned solicitations, and accurately maintaining the system of record, Advance.
  • Regional Planning

  • Leverage Capital Giving Directors and partners across AA&D to develop regional plans for each core region. With a focus on activities that will advance key prospect strategies and build the prospect pipeline in each region, works to determine needs for regional faculty / administrator travel, volunteer activities, and prospect-focused events.

    Basic Qualifications

    Graduate from an accredited college. Minimum of 15 years professional experience in university fundraising or related field, including at least five years of management experience with a proven ability to motivate and inspire staff.

    Additional Qualifications

  • Advanced degree a plus but not required.
  • Successful track record as a leader, manager, and strategist in a complex organization. The ideal candidate will have significant fundraising experience as part of a major comprehensive campaign.
  • Must be a professional, confidential, honest and trustworthy person. Must have an even disposition and be able to deal effectively and politely with people from all types of backgrounds and experience and in all types of difficult situations.
  • Must have a natural affinity for collaboration, leading through influence, and extremely high levels of emotional intelligence.
  • Must be drawn to a challenge and exhibit the patience necessary to advance solutions in a complex and collaborative organization.

    Demonstrates a personal commitment to high expectations as well as an ability to admit mistakes and forgive faults in others.

  • Is a superb and communicator who can deliver thoughtful, candid, and even difficult feedback with compassion.
  • Must possess a learning mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • This position requires a sophisticated and comprehensive understanding of major and principal giving best-practices
  • Can evaluate accurately problems and display good, sound and confidential judgment. Must maintain a professional and caring demeanor.
  • Must be able to listen carefully as well as to influence and persuade others.

  • Superb organizational skills. Must have ability to think strategically and conceptually, manage multiple projects simultaneously and handle even difficult situations with a sense of humor.

  • Excellent public speaking, presentation skills and written communication skills required.
  • Computer literacy required must have experience with Windows-based PCs and prospect databases.
