St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport has more than 3,200 employees. It includes a 473-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and special needs services for adults and children.

St. Vincent’s is the first hospital in Fairfield County to be integrated into the Hartford HealthCare network, and is the system’s second-largest hospital.

POSITION SUMMARY / PURPOSE

The incumbent of this position is a professional Registered Nurse that utilizes the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, documentation, and evaluation) to administer the Employee Health program and oversee the Hospital’s Workers’ Compensation and FMLA program from a clinical perspective.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to; completing a pre-employment physical assessment and drug screen for all new employees, administration of appropriate vaccines to new hires and current staff, ensuring compliance with regulations regarding and respirator fit testing for clinical staff, administration and tracking flu vaccines, completion of occupational health evaluations and / or contacting physicians involved in treating employees with work related injuries to ensure employees return to work in a safe and timely manner, and for the upkeep and maintenance of all employee medical files.

Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction and maintaining strict patient confidentiality. The incumbent of this position will annually complete all mandatory education requirements for this position.

Assist with Wellness activities and Co-Chair the Wellness Committee.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for completing pre-employment physical assessments for all potential new employees. Based on assessment findings, clears the potential employee for work assignment or refers the individual to an occupational physician for further evaluation.
  • Consults with physician and Human Resources regarding the potential employees ability to perform the duties of the job

  • Communicates negative results to Human Resources or requests additional testing by an independent laboratory. Communicates with laboratory regarding outcome of test and forwards result to Human Resources.
  • Conducts volunteer physical assessments as needed. Based on assessment findings notify volunteer coordinator of potential volunteer clearance.
  • Monitors and executes vaccination programs for both new hires and current staff including but not limited to Hepatitis-B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella, and Varicella.
  • Consults with Physician re : administration and standing orders. Maintains all employee health records.

  • Ensures compliance with Tuberculosis Prevention Program by conducting new hire ppd’s consulting with Physician for positive ppd’s and ordering chest x-rays, and monitoring any unprotected exposure by conducting both baseline and post-exposing testing.
  • Maintains all employee health records.

  • Assists in the implementation of the Respiratory Protection Program by collaborating with other health team members in revising and developing policies to ensure the program’s effectiveness;
  • collaborates with management to determine the financial and personnel resources and necessary equipment required to implement the program;
  • collaborates with physician re : health respiratory protective devices and periodic program evaluation. Maintains all employee health records.

  • Facilitates the annual Flu Vaccine campaign to all Hospital employees, physicians and volunteers, students and contracted employees and maintains those records.
  • Monitors and coordinates work related injuries / illnesses with designated Workers’ Compensation carrier. Receives First Report of Injury forms and communicates with designated third party administrator.
  • Serves as a liaison to promote information to the employee, the manager, the treating physician, the workers’ compensation insurance carrier and Human Resources to ensure a timely and safe return to work.

    Coordinates modified duty program as an interim alternative for the employee with a temporary limited work capacity. Maintains all employee health records.

  • Determines real and potential health problems and hazards and works in conjunction with other Hospital personnel to develop and implement programs to reduce and / or eliminate these in the workplace.
  • Assist with Environment of Care committee goals and specialized safety programs including, but not limited to, coordinating the monthly Sharps Prevention Committee.

  • Update Occupational Health policies as needed, maintaining current guidelines with regards to oversight agencies such as OSHA, CDC and JHCAO.
  • Monitor employee health records related to occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Monitor and advise on follow-up testing recommended.
  • Maintain all employee health records.

  • Facilitate FMLA tracking with third party administrator. Ensure communication with employees and managers related to leave of absence status.
  • Participates in meeting HR Work Plan goals. Assumes other responsibilities including participating in process improvement and quality assurance initiatives to enhance customer satisfaction and the unit / team function.
  • Meet required job specific competencies for assigned unit, including mandatory educational requirements. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to stay current on the latest trends related to position.
  • Participates in staff meetings, educational programs and in-service meetings to maintain competencies. Complies with hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, attendance, sexual harassment, dress code, corporate compliance, confidentiality and others.

    EDUCATION

    Maintains current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut. Specialization in Occupational Health preferred.

    Occupational Health nurse will sit for the COHN exam within two years of becoming an OH nurse.

    Knowledge of OSHA regulations and CDC guidelines required. Knowledge of infectious disease and worker safety program requirements for a healthcare setting required.

    EXPERIENCE

    Bachelor’s degree in the field of Nursing with 3-5 years of experience, preferably in Occupational Health.
