Assists the Horticulture Department in the daily operations and maintenance of the living collections, grounds, and growing operation through horticultural practices and volunteer management.

Provides visitor assistance and ensures a positive visitor experience.

This 40 hours per week position is located at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, 4801 La Crosse Ave, Austin, TX 78739.

Driving a UT or personally owned vehicle is a marginal function of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Horticulture department in the daily operations and maintenance of the living collections and grounds. Tasks include Installation and care of plant materials, Raking, weeding, mowing, watering, mulching, pruning, shaping, Bed preparation and construction, and spot repair of decomposed granite paths, Plant accession record keeping, Integrated Pest Management IPM, Safe and effective use of hand tools and light power equipment, Basic irrigation operation, Updating of plant identification signage as needed, Removal of garden debris including human generated litter, fallen branches, and animal scat, Collect and process seeds.
  • Works independently and unsupervised on scheduled weekends. Perform associated administrative duties.
  • Participate in education and mission related activities such as volunteer training, docent training and enrichments, site tours, festivals, and special events.
  • Inspects, maintains, and programs the irrigation system in the Texas Arboretum. Repairs solenoid valves, sprinkler heads, and PVC pipe, and makes modifications to system to accommodate new plantings.
  • Assists the public in answering questions relating to the Wildflower Center and horticulture, and strives to ensure positive visitor experiences.
  • Effectively coordinates and communicates with members of the horticulture staff and all other departments.
  • Trains, supervises, and works with regular volunteers, community service volunteers, and interns.
  • Required Qualifications

    Two years professional horticultural experience. Experience following basic work instructions. Attention to safety is essential.

    Possession of a current, valid Texas driver's license required. Must work well with and supervise diverse groups of people, be well organized, detail oriented, able to set priorities, take direction well from supervisor, and have excellent communication skills.

    Basic computer skills and competency with MS Word, Excel, email required. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications

    More than two years professional horticultural experience, or associates or bachelor's degree in horticulture or related field and one year professional horticultural experience required.

    Have substantial knowledge of horticultural techniques, plant materials and pathologies. Extensive knowledge of Texas native plants or ecological systems.

    Experience installing and maintaining irrigation systems. Skill and willingness to make public presentations and conduct media interviews.

    Current Pest Control Applicator's License. First Aid certification.

    Driving Required

    A valid Texas, Class C, driver’s license is required to apply for this job; driving is an essential job function. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence.

    If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

    Salary Range

    $23,920 + depending on qualifications

    Working Conditions

    Moderate physical activity (bending, lifting, pushing / pulling), stamina, and the ability to lift fifty pounds required.

    Work outside in all types of weather. Ability to maneuver in narrow or confined places around fragile plants.

    Work schedule is Wednesday through Sunday 8 : 00-5 : 00. Occasional evenings for mission related events.
