P osition Summary

This position will be responsible for managing and overseeing the activities of WSB’s construction and geotechnical materials testing laboratories.

WSB currently has two labs with the main lab in Burnsville and a second lab in Rochester. This position will have overall responsibility for both labs and some field testing staff.

Testing will be performed on soil, aggregate, concrete and asphalt / bituminous pavement. The lab manager will properly train personnel and follow state and federal standards, project specifications and the company quality management system when performing tests.

The lab manager will ensure testing is completed in a safe and timely manner, maintain and record log of daily work and tests performed and time and materials expended.

While the focus of the position will be on Laboratory Management, there may be times that you will also function as an instructor, supervisor, material tester and spend time in the field addressing materials related issues.

A strong knowledge of aggregates, concrete and bituminous materials and testing procedures is essential as is an understanding of materials properties and performance.

Position Responsibilities

  • Ensures that Quality Managements System is updated and maintained and adheres to the requirements of AASHTO R-18
  • Ensures that laboratory staff are properly trained and equipped to safely and accurately complete assigned tests in a timely manner
  • Oversees the lab layout, organization and appearance, including keeping the area and equipment clean and uncluttered
  • Oversees maintenance of equipment and calibration and adjustments as needed
  • Oversees the administrative systems of the laboratory to ensure that reports and information (mathematical calculations, making graphical solutions and graphical representations) required to serve the client are properly prepared and reported
  • Collects samples of soils and construction materials in the field to measure physical characteristics
  • Performs a variety of tests on construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete / mortar / grout, reinforcing steel and asphalt using materials-testing equipment
  • Read construction documents to determine project details and specifications
  • Neatly and accurately complete all required paperwork, including daily reports, test reports and timesheets in a timely manner
  • Communicates orally and in writing with engineers and staff members, agency representatives, contractors and business and property owners
  • Adhere to construction site safety guidelines and promote a safe working environment
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Minimum Education and Experience

  • 5 years of experience performing laboratory testing on construction materials
  • Construction materials testing related certifications such as ACI, MnDOT and ICC
  • Experience in a lab with AMRL Accreditation and the Accreditation process
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Preferred Education and Experience

  • A two year technical degree from an accredited school related to civil engineering / construction
  • Experience running a construction materials lab, scheduling and managing staff, and performing test procedures

  • Comfortable using MS Office applications (Word / Excel / Outlook)

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds
  • Note : Depending on your assignment, you may be required to drive your own vehicle. Therefore, you must be able to provide a vehicle suitable for use on construction sites.

    We will compensate you at the current federal per mile rate for use of your own vehicle for work related activities.
