Please note, as we navigate our work through the current global pandemic, we want to acknowledge that this position will evolve as COVID-19 work protocols and requirements change.

The duties of this role will likely be modified as necessary to meet health and safety compliance and Forterra's requirements for a safe work environment.

Due to uncertainty around COVID-19 new AmeriCorps members selected for this position will likely need to start their service position from home with a computer provided by Forterra.

While Forterra is currently operating some essential field programs under strict safety protocols, some of the duties noted below are currently on hold and will be dependent on state restrictions and further evaluation by Forterra and partners.

Summary of Position

Forterra is recruiting three Washington Service Corps Individual Placement (IP) AmeriCorps members to join our team. The AmeriCorps Stewardship Associate positions support three Forterra Restoration and Stewardship programs.

  • Green City Partnerships : A collaboration of 14 cities dedicated to creating a livable city with healthy urban forest.
  • These Green Cities partner with Forterra, local restoration crews, organizations and volunteers to restore 13000 acres for urban forested parks and natural areas.

  • Riparian Restoration Program : A successful watershed approach to restore and enhance salmon habitat and water quality along our local rivers.
  • This innovative program provides technical assistance and on the ground restoration support to restore private and public properties along priority rivers systems.

  • Forterra Lands : Forterra oversees the management of over 14,000 acres of diverse landscapes that we own or hold easements on.
  • Forterra stewards the lands we own and monitors our conservation easements annually.

    Member Duties

    Volunteer Outreach and Event Support (Note : Volunteer events are not currently permitted under state COVID-19 restrictions, and on hold until further notice.)

  • Recruit and manage volunteers for events on Forterra and partner lands by posting and promoting events and engaging with volunteers during events. (On hold)
  • Provide logistical and leadership support before, during and after volunteer events, including tool management, ordering event materials, leading groups of volunteers in restoration projects, clean up and restocking of event materials, entering volunteers event data into a database and following up with volunteers (On hold)
  • Contribute content to web, social media, e-newsletters, and other marketing of stewardship volunteer opportunities
  • Create promotional materials, develop and implement outreach activities to engage volunteers and attend outreach events on behalf of Forterra stewardship programs (in person outreach events on hold)
  • Develop and lead educational activities (games, trainings and interpretive walks)
  • Monitoring and Restoration of Forterra and Partner Lands

  • Monitor riparian restoration project sites and Forterra lands in coordination with the staff, by doing site visits, preparing materials, follow up documentation of findings and communication to landowners
  • Support restoration planning and logistics by ordering restoration project materials, tracking restoration and monitoring success of restoration efforts.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience in environmental restoration, outreach, marketing, volunteer management, community engagement, or related field
  • Academic background in science, organizing, communications, or related field is helpful but not required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to lead events and groups, including strong public speaking skills.
  • Ability to serve independently and as part of a team
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Ability and willingness to serve some non-standard hours for volunteer events, including evenings and weekends (there are a lot of Saturday events)
  • Valid, insurable driver’s license / record
  • English required, additional languages a plus
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word)
  • Travel, Service Conditions, and Physical Environment

    This position is subject to activities beyond typical indoor environmental conditions of a professional office setting. The essential physical requirements of this position include :

  • Ability to exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and / or an equivalent amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
  • Ability to sit or otherwise remain in a stationary position at a computer station for the majority of the day
  • Ability to frequently move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, etc.
  • Ability to constantly operate a computer and other office equipment such as calculators, copy machines, and printers
  • Ability to safely and correctly use hand tools associated with restoration, and ability to instruct and supervise others in the use of same tools
  • Ability to communicate accurately with team members, volunteer leadership, clients, and vendors about matters related to the daily operations of the organization
  • Ability to serve outside during inclement weather
  • Ability to walk on uneven ground
  • Travel and field time, approximately 50% of service hours which could include travel within the region (primarily King, Snohomish, and Pierce Counties).
  • This position includes travel that requires the ability to drive a personal or company-provided car
