Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
As a member of University Public Affairs, the public relations specialist assists in managing the reputation of and elevating national awareness for Virginia Commonwealth University and its affiliated health system.
The public relations specialist is located on the MCV Campus and specifically works with VCU’s four health sciences schools and one college (School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Dentistry, School of Pharmacy, and College of Health Professions).
develops strategic communications plans; assists in issues management; and serves as a rotating member of the emergency communications on-call team.
The position is responsible for supporting the priorities identified by the VCU Quest 2025 and VCU Health Vision by Design strategic plans, in particular goals related to raising national awareness for the institution’s academic, research and innovation and promoting student success.
General duties are divided between executing professional writing assignments and providing strategic public relations support, including issues and crisis communications management.
Support recruitment efforts through storytelling and external media efforts to explain the curriculum.
Resources to raise our institutional profile on a national level are limited, hence institutional and communications priorities are centered around current areas of excellence, in particular our research and clinical trial efforts in the following fields : neurosciences and addiction studies, cancer, children’s and women’s health, cardiovascular health and pharmaceutical engineering.
