Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

As a member of University Public Affairs, the public relations specialist assists in managing the reputation of and elevating national awareness for Virginia Commonwealth University and its affiliated health system.

The public relations specialist is located on the MCV Campus and specifically works with VCU’s four health sciences schools and one college (School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Dentistry, School of Pharmacy, and College of Health Professions).

  • The specialist identifies and tells stories with strategic relevance to the VCU enterprise on owned channels and through media outreach;
  • develops strategic communications plans; assists in issues management; and serves as a rotating member of the emergency communications on-call team.

    The position is responsible for supporting the priorities identified by the VCU Quest 2025 and VCU Health Vision by Design strategic plans, in particular goals related to raising national awareness for the institution’s academic, research and innovation and promoting student success.

    General duties are divided between executing professional writing assignments and providing strategic public relations support, including issues and crisis communications management.

  • QUEST THEME 1 STUDENT SUCCESS : Develop stories and media relations to highlight interesting examples of student success, academic excellence and interesting examples of experiential learning.
  • Support recruitment efforts through storytelling and external media efforts to explain the curriculum.

  • QUEST THEME 2 NATIONAL PROMINENCE : Develop communications strategies, content and media relations campaigns that support the vision to be recognized as a premier national urban public research university and academic health center.
  • Resources to raise our institutional profile on a national level are limited, hence institutional and communications priorities are centered around current areas of excellence, in particular our research and clinical trial efforts in the following fields : neurosciences and addiction studies, cancer, children’s and women’s health, cardiovascular health and pharmaceutical engineering.

  • QUEST THEME 3 URBAN AND REGIONAL TRANSFORMATION : Develop and execute PR strategies to increase awareness for how VCU and VCU Health collaborate with the community to address social and health inequities.
  • QUEST THEME 4 DIVERSITY DRIVING EXCELLENCE : Establish diversity as a recurring theme in any communication effort about VCU’s excellence and success.
  • Minimum Hiring Standards

  • Proven media relations experience with an ability to promote academic health sciences and medicine news to local, regional and national journalists.
  • Understanding of scientific principals and an ability to translate complex scientific concepts to a public audience in creative and compelling lay language.
  • Strong writing and editing skills for print, online and broadcast purposes.
  • Experience working with scientists and physicians.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong initiative.
  • Ability to work independently at a consistently high level of productivity.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in a related field or an equivalent combination of college and related experience.
  • Several years’ experience in journalism or public relations.
  • Preferred Hiring Standards

  • Demonstrated ability and creativity in planning and implementing public relations programs and analyzing problems to propose effective public relations solutions.
  • Good understanding of brand journalism and media relations in the digital age.
  • Experience collaborating with social media, video, digital and marketing teams to develop compelling content and integrated public relations campaigns.
