Job Summary

Incumbent decontaminates, operationally checks, assembles, sterilizes, and distributes surgical instrumentation, implants, supplies, and equipment throughout the Medical Center.

Incumbent maintains documentation related to these duties and assists in the training of other Sterile Processing Technicians.

Incumbent pulls needed supplies and instruments for next day cases or Emergent cases (E-Cases) by utilizing the OR preference cards.

Performs all tasks necessary to prepare and maintain accurate case carts.

Incumbent operates and maintains sterilization equipment, decontamination equipment, and computer systems related to these duties.

This position requires the flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum one year previous Sterile Processing Technician experience
  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (CRCST- Certified Registered Central Service Tech, AHCSMM, or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician CBSPD)
  • High School graduate or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to communicate with nursing, technical, and medical staff
  • Ability operate machinery including sterilizers, washers and ultrasonic cleaners
  • Ability to safely move heavy trays and equipment, lifting up to 50 pounds, and stand for prolonged periods of time

  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (CRCST- Certified Registered Central Service Tech, AHCSMM, or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician CBSPD)

  • Work Environment

  • Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong.
  • Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.

  • Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility.
  • Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.
  • Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.
  • Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.
